Why are there standards for heating appliance glass?

Insert, stove, and fireplace glasses are not regular glass. They are made of ceramic glass, capable of withstanding extreme temperatures up to 750 °C. To guarantee user safety and installation compliance, these glasses must meet strict French and European standards.

These standards define the mechanical resistance, heat endurance, transparency, and safety of use for the glass used in wood or pellet heating appliances.

The main applicable European standards

In Europe, several regulatory texts govern heating appliance glass:

  • EN 13229 : concerns inserts and closed fireplaces.
  • EN 13240 : concerns independent wood stoves.
  • EN 14785 : specific to pellet stoves.

These standards set precise criteria regarding:

  • heat resistance (up to 750 °C for ceramic glass),
  • minimal thermal expansion,
  • safety against shattering in case of breakage,
  • transparency to ensure a clear view of the flames.

French standards to comply with

In France, insert and stove glasses must comply with the DTU (Documents Techniques Unifiés) and national regulations:

  • DTU 24.1 : governs the design and installation of flue pipes and requires the use of glass suitable for high temperatures.
  • Standard NF EN 13229 : mandatory for any insert or closed fireplace sold in France.
  • Thermal regulations (RT 2012 / RE 2020) : impose energy performance criteria, linked in particular to the airtightness of appliances and therefore to the quality of the glass.

The consequences of non-compliant glass

Using standard or tempered glass instead of certified ceramic glass is dangerous and non-compliant:

  • Risk of immediate breakage upon contact with fire,
  • Safety hazard (flying shards, burns, smoke),
  • Loss of compliance with French and European regulations,
  • Possible refusal of compensation by insurance in case of fire.

To comply with regulations and heat safely, it is imperative to install a certified ceramic glass.

How to check the compliance of your glass?

  • Verify that the glass is made of ceramic glass.
  • Check for the presence of a certification reference (EN or NF).
  • Request a certificate of conformity in case of doubt.
