Air needs to be able to circulate around the logs in order to ensure they burn properly and that the heat is evenly distributed.

Andirons are pairs of cast iron bars on which the logs are placed, so they are raised and can burn better.

Log grates work the same way as andirons but they consist of a whole cast iron grate which holds even small logs off the hearth floor.

Grills allow you to grill food in the fireplace.
