What is chemical chimney sweeping and why is it important?

Chemical chimney sweeping is a method of cleaning chimney flues, wood-burning stoves, inserts, boilers, stoves and pellet-burning cookers. Unlike conventional chimney sweeping, which uses brushes and other tools, chemical chimney sweeping uses chemicals designed to dissolve deposits of soot, tar and other combustible residues inside the flue.

Chemical chimney sweeping is essential for several reasons. Firstly, the build-up of soot and tar in the flue presents a major fire hazard. Chemical chimney sweeping helps to remove these flammable deposits, thereby reducing the risk of fire. It also clears potential blockages, reducing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, a deadly gas. What's more, a clean flue improves heating performance and extends durability by avoiding potential damage caused by deposits.

How often should you carry out a chemical chimney sweep?

The recommended frequency of chemical chimney sweeping depends on a number of factors, including how often you use your appliance and the type of fuel you use. As a general rule, it is advisable to carry out a chemical sweep at least once or twice a year, in addition to a traditional sweep carried out once a year.

It is important to emphasise that chemical chimney sweeping in no way replaces traditional chimney sweeping. Traditional chimney sweeping is compulsory at least once a year (Decree no. 2023-641 of 20 July 2023 on the maintenance of fireplaces and combustion heating, cooking and hot water appliances and the sweeping of flues). This traditional sweeping must be carried out by an approved professional. Neglecting to carry out traditional chimney sweeping can have serious consequences. If you fail to do so, your insurance company will not cover you in the event of a claim.

Chemical chimney sweeping should be seen as a complement to, but not a substitute for, the standard mechanical sweeping procedure.

Precautions and safety when using chemicals

When using chemical chimney sweeping products, it is important to take safety precautions. Make sure you read the manufacturer's instructions carefully and follow the safety recommendations. Wear appropriate protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, to avoid any contact with the chemicals. In addition, make sure the area is properly ventilated during and after use of the chemicals to avoid inhaling harmful fumes. Finally, keep chemical products out of the reach of children and pets to avoid any accidents.

Choosing the right products

It is essential to choose the right products for chemical chimney sweeping. Make sure you select recommended products. Avoid using unsuitable products that could damage flues or compromise the safety of your heating system.
